Is Asbestos Ceiling Hazardous?
Many of the homes built prior to 1980s observe acoustic asbestos ceilings, and the removal of acoustic asbestos ceiling has become commonly done for environmental safety precautions.
Many homes contain acoustic asbestos ceiling in their bedrooms, living rooms. the effects of asbestos contained within its materials that if inhaled would cause serious health hazards.
University of Arizona Dept. of Risk Management and Safety explains the hazards of asbestos in the following manner.
"Asbestos is a respiratory hazard and espiratory/gastrointestinal carcinogen. Exposure to asbestos occurs when reparable fibers are released into the air and then inhaled. Since exposure occurs when asbestos is inhaled, the best way to prevent exposure is to prevent asbestos fibers from becoming airborne.
Asbestos containing materials are therefore divided into two categories: friable and non-friable. Friable means that a material is able to be reduced to powder by hand pressure. Asbestos containing materials that are friable, by their nature, have a much greater tendency to release fibers. They require specific control measures to prevent releasing fibers into the air. Conversely, non-friable asbestos containing materials, by their nature, do not want to give up their fibers into the air. This class of materials must be mechanically impacted (power tools such as sanders, drills, chippers, saws, etc.) to release fibers. Asbestos containing textured ceiling materials is a friable material."

Many homes have acoustic, “cottage-cheese”-type material applied to some or all of the ceilings. Acoustic ceiling material samples obtained from Bay Area homes built before 1980 often contain a percentage (usually 5-10%) of chrysotile asbestos. Until 1978, when the practice was banned, asbestos was commonly mixed into sprayed-on ceiling material to give added resilience, fire-resistance and sound-proofing properties. Some ceiling material applied after that date has also been found to contain a percentage of asbestos material because many contractors continued to add small quantities to the ceiling covering mixture in order to improve the flow of material through the spray gun.
Asbestos-containing ceiling material in a home does not necessarily need to be removed, as long as the occupants of the home can avoid disturbing it. Asbestos ceiling material should not be dusted with a feather-duster, for example. Even cobwebs should be removed by gently pressing a wet paper towel against the material to collect the cobweb. Closets that have asbestos material sprayed on the ceiling must be arranged so items on the top shelf do not touch the material. No hooks, nails or screws should be installed into the material as this would likely cause fiber release. The top edges of all the drapes and blinds in the house should be lowered to ensure that the ceiling material does not get rushed when they are drawn.
Unfortunately, visually inspecting the ceiling cannot determine if asbestos is present, even by an experienced inspector. You must submit small samples of the material to an analytical laboratory where they can be examined under a microscope. Samples should be taken by a qualified individual or a professional asbestos inspector. If you wish to take ceiling material samples yourself, use the the protocol outlined below; however, check first with the individual laboratory for their sampling requirements:
1. Wear an individually fit-tested, air-purifying respirator equipped with High Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) filters. (Available from safety equipment distributors.)
2. Wet the surface of the material with water from a hand-held spray bottle. Wet material is unlikely to release fibers when disturbed.
3. Carefully scrape a 50 cent piece-sized area of wet material off the substrate and into a zip-lock bag held close to the material and seal immediately. Be sure to take a complete cross-section of material, down to the drywall.
4. Wipe any loose material up with a soaking wet paper towel and flush down the toilet.
5. Ideally, the bare patch should be sealed with an asbestos encapsulant (an asbestos inspector would have some or a hardware store). If an encapsulant is unavailable, latex spray paint can be used to cover the spot where the sample was taken.
Because the asbestos was sometimes mixed into the ceiling material by hand, the material is not uniform in composition; parts of the ceiling may not have any asbestos in them, while other locations may have a relatively high asbestos content. For this reason, material for testing should be taken from several locations. Collect at least three samples of material, or at least one sample per room (if it is present in more than one room) whichever is greater. If the laboratory fails to detect asbestos in any of the sample, it is reasonable to consider the material as non-asbestos containing.[souce:http://www.sfdph.org/dph/EH/Asbestos/Prevention.asp

If you have an acoustic ceiling that was installed before 1978 chances are good that it contains asbestos. However, according to the Environmental Protection Agency, asbestos-containing building materials do not require abatement unless they are a potential health hazard. The EPA suggests that asbestos-containing building materials that are “friable” or flaking could potentially release asbestos fibers that are hazardous to one’s health. You can determine if your acoustic ceiling contains asbestos by using a test performed by a certified testing agency, which you can find by contacting your local chapter of the American Lung Association.

Damage to asbestos releases the fibers into the air and once inhaled, it becomes lodged in the linings of organs—such as the heart, lungs, and abdomen. This may lead to various asbestos-related diseases such as asbestosis, mesothelioma, and other forms of asbestos cancer
Mesothelioma (mez-uh-thee-lee-O-muh) is a type of cancer that can be either malignant or benign. Malignant mesothelioma is the most hazardous form of this cancer and in most cases will lead to death. This cancer affects the mesothelium, which protects the heart, stomach, lungs, and other organs by making a special fluid that allows the organs to move. Due to the latency period—which can be 20 to 50 years—it is difficult to diagnose and treat.
The risk of lung cancer and mesothelioma increases with the number of fibers inhaled. The risk of lung cancer from inhaling asbestos fibers is also greater if you smoke.
If you believe that your home contains asbestos that has been disturbed, do not sweep, dust, or vacuum the debris. Immediately contact a professional to clean it up!!!
Asbestos Cancer Treatments are more effective and symptoms are more identifiable if your doctor is aware that you have been exposed to asbestos.
